We are happy to welcome two international speakers who will discuss the obstacles that copyright can raise to access to and reuse of public sector information. In a recent case (T-185/19), the EU General Court ruled that technical standards, set by a private organisation, can be protected under copyright and it denied a request for access to Commission documents on the basis of this protection.
Mireille van Eechoud is a professor of information law at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), University of Amsterdam. She will discuss the general issues and the legal framework on access to public sector information (including the 2019 EU Directive on Open data and the re-use of public sector information) and the tension between access, re-use and intellectual property rights.
Jens Hackl is counsel at Morrison & Foerster LLP in Berlin (Gemany) advising clients particularly in all areas of EU and German antitrust law, unfair competition law and related areas. He litigated the Public.Resource.Org and Right to Know case against the European Commission before the General Court.
